Introduction of Toyo-Mulching System

The huge landslides happened in 1990s aroused public concern about slope safety in Hong Kong. To avoid tragedy from happening again, the Government has been taking a series of preventive measures to stabilize the slopes. Among different slope safety measures are being carried out in Hong Kong, sprayed concrete is the most commonly used, however, it is being criticized of not natural and of spoiling the visual harmony of surrounding environment.

By the combinations of geo-synthetic reinforcement, bio-engineering bonding and horticulture experience, Toyo-Mulching System (TMS) provides the most effective way on balancing the erosion control works as well as the landscaping soft works on various kinds of slope surface.

The Toyo-Mulching System consists of permanent hardware and software components. The hardware components are permanent high strength pvc coated galvanized iron mesh, galvanized mild steel anchor and sub-anchor. The software components are the unique Soil Factor Mix, which contains compost, peatmoss, water retaining agent, long-lasting fertilizers, bonding agent and seeds.

Our strategic partners known as “Nisshoku Corporation” invented this hydromulching technology 15 years ago in Japan. It has been applied commonly on the slopes for vegetation in Japan and Taiwan for over 10 years. It provides not only erosion control but also visual improvement on slope. Since 1998, Toyo has applied TMS widely in landscaping projects where appropriate. So far, we have already finished over 50 public and private projects over Hong Kong, and the performance of TMS is very stable and satisfactory.

The objective of the Toyo-Mulching System is to establish the vegetation equilibrium ecology on the any slope such that the vegetation can be self-sustained for a long time with low maintenance. Not only to improve the microenvironment, by the time of establishment of vegetation cover, the weathering of earth material and the surface erosion can be minimized. The Toyo-Mulching System can be divided into three types of work:

The General Toyo-Mulching System is used to establish the vegetation ecology on the soil or non-soil gentle slope with gradient not more than 45^o. By fixing of three dimensional wire mesh and spraying of light weight Soil Factor Mix, a planting layer is self sustained on the slope and will therefore provide the vegetation.

The Strip Toyo-Mulching System is used to establish the vegetation ecology on the soil or non-soil steep slope with gradient not more than 80^o. In addition to the General Toyo-Mulching System, a double layer of non-woven fertilizer strip was inserted into the three-dimension wire mesh. The fertilizer strip can provide adequate moisture and fertilizer to the vegetation on the steep slope.

The Creat Toyo-Mulching System is to establish a semi-rigid structure and vegetation ecology to cover the soil or rock slope with gradient not more than 80^o. During the installation work, fixing and tightening mild steel bars on the long anchors form a series of square grid pattern of Creat. The wet spraying machine will be used to spray the ready mixed cement mortar on the structurally reinforced bar in order to form a rigid structure of grid pattern. This can provide a structural protection of slope. Consequently, the spraying of Soil Factor Mix can provide the vegetation ecology on the whole slope surface in order to achieve the full vegetation cover in the long run.
